Artist Ernie McMullen to Teach Intermediate Realist Oil Painting Course at ArtWaves

BAR HARBOR—ArtWaves is pleased to announce a ten-week Intermediate Realist Oil Painting course led by acclaimed local artist and founding College of the Atlantic faculty member, Ernest McMullen.

Designed for students with existing oil painting experience, the course will guide participants through the technical methods and historical theories of the realist tradition, drawing on approaches used by old masters like Caravaggio and Vermeer. McMullen, a celebrated landscape painter of Mount Desert Island, will focus on refining brushwork, mastering techniques such as glazing and alla prima, and building a sophisticated color palette to create convincing form and atmosphere.

The course runs for ten sessions, meeting on Saturdays from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM (EST), starting November 29, 2025, and concluding on February 7, 2026, at the ArtWaves Fine Arts Studio. Tuition is $260.00 for members and $280.00 for non-members (including lab fees).
