Downeast Trout Unlimited Presents Water Quality in Downeast Maine with Mark Whiting and Medea Steinman Carrie
ELLSWORTH—Downeast Trout Unlimited presents Water Quality in Downeast Maine with Mark Whiting and Medea Steinman, Oct. 22, 5:30 p.m. In person and online: Moore Community Center 125 State St. Ellsworth and via Zoom https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/MrZqq5ePRPyRt_Z-ZcModQ
Water quality in brook trout streams of Hancock County with Mark Whiting and Medea Steinman. After 200 years of intensive forestry and 100 years of acid rain, the water quality of eastern Maine streams is often poor. Hancock County Soil & Water Conservation District, DETU, DSF, and the Friends of Taunton Bay collaborated to collect water quality data from trout streams in Hancock County and Washington County. Maine DEP, IFW and DMR helped select priorities and the Maine Outdoor Heritage Foundation and the John Sage Foundation provided funding. The results indicate that while the water looks clean and clear it has been stripped of the nutrients that sustain aquatic life, especially calcium. Calcium in needed for cell division and is critical for salmonid eggs and fry.
