Gilded Age Historian To Visit Bar Harbor Historical Society
BAR HARBOR—Author and historian Kathleen Langone will visit the Bar Harbor Historical Society on Friday, October 10, at 5 p.m. to share the story of artist Amalia Kussner.
Kussner was a beloved painter of miniature portraits of society’s elite during the famed Gilded Age. In addition to English and Russian royalty, she painted society’s elite, including some Bar Harbor summer residents like Mrs. Caroline Astor and her daughter Carrie, and Alva and Consuelo Vanderbilt.
Kussner’s own life is mired in mystery and intrigue. As a single woman in the 1800s she navigated a social world far above her class, creating a mystique around her miniatures and gaining access to the intimate spaces of the Gilded Age’s wealthiest families. Langone will delve into some of the questions that still surround her life. In addition, a small exhibit of miniatures in BHHS’s collection will be on display.
Admission is free, but registration is requested for this special event. Register at www.barharborhistorical.org/events
