Wendell Gilley hosts film about history of the studio furniture movement
SOUTHWEST HARBOR—In keeping with its focus on carving as an art form, the Wendell Gilley Museum is pleased to host a special presentation of “Masters of the Movement: The Tradition of Studio Furniture” by filmmaker Michael Perlman and Tyra Hanson, director of the Gallery at Somes Sound, on Friday, Oct. 10. There will be a social gathering from 5:30 p.m.followed at 6 p.m. by a screening of the 30-minute film; a question-and-answer session with Hanson and furniture maker Joseph Tracy will follow. Registration is requested at www.wendellgilleymuseum.org/calendar.
The film showcases seven of the Gallery at Somes Sound’s furniture makers who have been taught by or apprenticed under the founders of the studio furniture movement, an American sub-filed of studio craft including Tracy, Ted Blachly, Jon Brooks, Timothy Coleman, Duncan Gowdy, Yuri Kobayashi, and David Lamb. Admission is free but donations are welcome and will be split between the Wendell Gilley Museum and the New Hampshire Furniture Masters, which is celebrating its 30 years as a nonprofit organization with a focus on preserving the centuries-long tradition of custom furniture making in New England.
